Your mailbox capacity on the server is 100 MB; the limit for individual messages (with attachments) is also 10 Mb. NOTE: In order to receive a very large file by e-mail, it is best to download any messages residing on the server to make as much room as possible available.

Mailbox size limits are much more common today. There are several reasons for this, as well as options. Most e-mail servers use POP (Post Office Protocol), which was constructed with the assumption that e-mail messages would be simple messages. However, users are sending increasingly larger and more complex documents, as well as multimedia files with graphics and audio of various formats. The e-mail protocol has done admirably well in handling most of these things, but all too often large or densely formatted material cause havoc with POP servers. Such messages or files undergo a "ballooning" effect whereby their size is significantly increased, and a file size that seems reasonable on a user's machine may be enormous on the server. E-mail users may find that they are unable to download mail because of individual problem messages blocking the download.

Methods of Preventing Blocked Mailboxes:

  • Sending large files with FTP (File Transfer Protocol). This protocol was specifically built for uploading and downloading large files and documents. Wyoming.com offers FTP and website services for those who request it. FTP is especially useful for those who frequently need to transfer such files, since the files themselves don't need to be sent to correspondents. All one needs to do is include the URL in an e-mail message, and the recipient can just click on the link to load a browser to retrieve the full file. (For example, you may go to our own FTP site, ftp://ftp.Wyoming.com/pub/pub/ to download any of hundreds of files).

  • Compressing documents before sending. There are good compression utilities like Winzip or PKZip available to compress and decompress files. Additionally, graphics files should be converted to JPEG, or some other compressed graphic format, before attaching to an email. (Many graphics viewers and programs are available which will perform this function) Note: Bitmap (.bmp) files can be extremely large and unwieldy for e-mail.

  • Copying the message and creating a new e-mail instead of forwarding. Forwarding messages has become an everyday occurence. It is so easy to forward the latest joke or cartoon to a friend. However, when a message is forwarded multiple times the message may be damaged or become unwieldy.
